Welcome back to Grace and Lipstick! Back in 2019 I wrote an in-depth honest review of Riawna Capri and Nikki Lee’s new hair care line: IN COMMON Beauty. I have, no joke, been using IN COMMON products ever since! As a hairstylist I love using these products behind the chair, as a friend it’s my go-to recommendation, and as a beauty lover it’s a staple in my shower. Naturally, I decided it’s time to give an UPDATED review and share more about why I love using IN COMMON beauty products.

In Common Hair Care

What is IN COMMON Beauty

Let’s begin with what is IN COMMON Beauty for those who have never heard of it before. Celebrity Hair Stylists, Riawna Capri and Nikki Lee, created this hair care line in 2019. According to their website, “[they] wanted to create a hair care line that is inclusive of all hair types + textures + that celebrates everything that is perfectly uniquely YOU.” As a hairstylist, I was intrigued to try this new hair care line because I trusted they would make a product that every hair dresser would want their clients to use! One thing that I found unique about their approach is that they wanted their products to act almost similarly to that of a skincare routine, but for your hair! It was new, fresh and innovative, smelled amazing, and supported a female, hair-stylist owned company!

It’s About The Quality!

Another aspect to IN COMMON Beauty that caught my eye, is that they were invested in sourcing better-for-you ingredients and leaving out harmful ingredients and fillers. They wanted to create hair care products that would not only keep your hair healthy but would also keep your bodies healthy! According to www.incommonbeauty.com all their products are claimed to have:

  • No harsh sulfates
  • Heat protection up to 450 degrees
  • UVA/UVB filters
  • Vegetarian
  • Color Safe (SLS/SLES free)
  • Mineral oil and petrolatum free
  • Paraben free
  • MI/MCI free
  • Sodium chloride free
  • Triethanolamine free

All About The Products!

Now let’s get down to what you’re really interested about: the products! The way IN COMMON works is they created a universal shampoo and hair mask that can be customized by adding one, two or all three enhancers to treat either dehydration, damage, or frizz.

Clear Haze Universal Shampoo

This has got to be one of the most FUN products to use out of the entire line. That is because the product dispenses out like a foam rather than a cream. Imagine a whipped cream bottle or a bottle of moose. I’m not sure I can ever go back to using traditional shampoo’s after getting used to using this foam style cleanser. The one thing I will note about this shampoo, is that it does have a learning curve! When I first tried it, I was disappointed because I felt like it wasn’t getting my hair as clean as I wanted. I also felt like it was leaving product residue in the back of my scalp [which I came to realize was actually unwashed, dirty hair]. After having a phone consultation with one of the brand reps, I learned that this shampoo takes a little getting used to!

My Tips For Using Clear Haze Universal Shampoo:

So here is what I’ve learned and how I became OBSESSED with this shampoo. In traditional shampoo formulas, the product comes out extremely concentrated in a type of cream. Once you add water and lather, the suds begin to form and the volume of the product grows. This allows you to move the product around the scalp and make sure its reaching the full surface area. With IN COMMON’S Crystal Haze, the product dispenses already lathered! So where you place the product is where it stays. There is no growing or spreading.

I personally like to dispense a softball sized amount of foam into my hand and I apply it all over my scalp using light pressure to spread the foam out evenly. I then scrub and wash my scalp and hair as usual. It should feel very similar to normal shampoo at this point, very sudsy and lathered. If you feel a spot that is not like that, just dispense another handful of foam and place it directly in that spot. If you’re anything like me and you like to go five to seven days between hair washes, I recommend that you shampoo your hair twice! And this goes for whichever brand of shampoo you’re using! 😉

Why You’ll Love Crystal Haze Universal Shampoo

Now that we’ve got the technicalities out of the way….lets move on to the reasons why I think you’ll love this shampoo! While this shampoo is light-weight, it is also ultra concentrated so it does an incredibly thorough job at cleaning your hair without stripping it of it’s natural oils (we need those!). IN COMMON claims this shampoo removes pollutants and styling residue, absorbs excess sebum, all while adding essential nutrients without weighing the hair down. This makes the Clear Haze Universal Shampoo a good choice for all hair types!

Velvet Cloud Universal Mask

You may be wondering why we are talking about a hair mask next, and not a conditioner. That is because IN COMMON Beauty opted to skip the conditioner all together, and formulate a hair mask that is light enough to use every wash, but packs the potency and properties of a hair mask. The Velvet Cloud Universal Mask is a moisturizing hair mask that is light-weight enough to use every time you shower. IN COMMON even recommends you use this product as a co-wash between hair washes. (I have never tried this personally but maybe will in the future!) While this product works great on it’s own with it’s moisturizing, reparative, and protective properties, it can be customized by adding an in-shower Enhancer to further treat your hair.

In Shower Enhancers:

There are three different in shower enhancers that you can use to customize your hair care system in your shower. The first is Mohave Rain Moisturizing Enhancer. This enhancer is good for anyone who feels that their hair is dry and/or brittle. The ingredients in this product are made to infuse dry hair with hydration and nourishment. Not only will this enhancer instantly hydrate and nourish your hair but it will also help prevent future moisture loss.

The second is Mended Sea Strengthening Enhancer. This enhancer is good for anyone who feels that their hair is weak and/or damaged. The ingredients in this product are meant to reinforce hair fibers which will prevent split ends, and restore hair from damage caused by heat styling or chemical treatments.

Thirdly is the Static Silk Smoothing Enhancer. This enhancer is good for anyone who feels that their hair is frizzy and/or unruly. The ingredients in this product (including hyaluronic acid) calm stubborn frizz and flyaways while protecting, adding shine and volume.

How I Use The Enhancers and Hair Mask

The way that I’ve chosen to use the in-shower enhancers is to have one of each type in my shower at all times. This is because I personally consider my hair to be frizzy, damaged, and dehydrated after multiple years of chemical and heat damage. Now, that’s not to say that I use all of them every time! It’s more on an “as needed” basis.

After I thoroughly cleanse my hair using the Clear Haze Universal Shampoo, I wring out excess water and spray an ample amount of whichever enhancer (if not all) from the mid shaft to the ends. I’m not stingy. I then like to gently brush through my hair to evenly distribute the product. This helps me not over-use the Velvet Cloud Universal Mask. With out rinsing out the enhancers, I apply the mask over-top and let it activate for at least three minutes. Then you can rinse them both out together!

Magic Myst

Magic Myst 4-in-1 Universal Elixir

Now that we’ve covered the in-shower hair washing systems offered by IN COMMON Beauty, we can now talk about the star of the show! Magic Myst Universal Elixir was the very first product that IN COMMON released. It was almost instantaneously a hit and in my opinion that is largely thanks to it’s usability! This is a hair product that anyone and everyone can use. It is a leave-in conditioner, a hair detangler, a smoothing balm, and a heat protectant. Most people will use it after they’ve washed their hair. After towel drying, you spritz the Magic Myst all over from the mid-shaft to the ends generously. This product is very lightweight so I’ve never experienced it weighing my hair down from using too much. After brushing it through to evenly distribute, you can let it air dry or style it as normal.

Another great use for Magic Myst is as a second or third day refresher. If you have wavy/curly hair or you simply curled your hair the day before, I like to spritz this all over and scrunch it in. It will not only revive your hair’s curl/bounce, but it will moisturize your ends, protect from UVA/UVB rays and also freshen up the scent! Which is a mega bonus when you want to push off washing your hair for another day or two.

Leave-In Hair Repair Treatment with Cellular Membrane Complex

The latest launch from IN COMMON Beauty is the ‘Leave-In Hair Repair Treatment with Cellular Membrane Complex’. Whew. That is a mouthful of a product name haha! I was introduced to this product as a client when I got my hair done and my interest was piqued. I decided to order some for my shower and have since become sold!

If you are a lover of K18’s Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask this product works in a very similar way! After you shampoo your hair, you squeeze out the excess water, and apply IN COMMON’s Leave-In Repair Treatment starting with a dime sized amount. You can add more as needed depending on the length and density of your hair. Less is more! This reparative product only takes 30 seconds to activate (as compared to K18’s 4 minutes) and you do not rinse it out! You can apply it to your hair in the shower and hop out; after 30 seconds you can apply Magic Myst and style as usual.

I personally feel that this product moves through my hair easier than K18’s does because I have very dense textured hair. I’m not 100 percent positive on if this product cancels out the need for K18 however. I need to do more research but for now I switch off between the two. According to incommonbeauty.com this weightless leave-in cream “takes a 360 degree approach to damage”. It repairs broken bonds and targets the cellular membrane complex with moisture while protecting the cuticle against damage caused from heat styling and chemical processing.

Overall Opinion of IN COMMON Beauty Hair Care

I have been wanting to write this post for years because after giving my honest review of the product back in 2019, I fell even more in love with this hair care line! In a world where there are SO MANY products to choose from, with different price ranges and different levels of effectiveness, I love that I get to support a women and hairstylist owned hair care company. This company has yet to let me down with the quality and effectiveness of it’s products! I personally believe that if you are someone who wants to take care of their hair, this product line is for you!

I know it can be easier and sometimes tempting to go to Target or CVS and just buy any brand shampoo and conditioner because it “works”. However! I can honestly say that the quality of ingredients and the thought behind the formulation of the products makes a tremendous difference! If you are investing into getting your hair professionally colored or treated at a salon, it’s important you protect that investment by caring for you hair in the shower at home. I believe IN COMMON Beauty is doing something right and that you can’t go wrong using any of their products!

A Note From Aly,

Grace and Lipstick Author

It has been far too long since I have written a beauty based blog post! I truly enjoyed sitting down and sharing my thoughts and information on this hair care line! I would love to get back into writing more! These past few years of life have been anything but easy as I’m sure you know if you’ve read my last few posts. However! I feel like the pages are turning, and I’m starting to move in a forward direction again. It had been a while since I felt that way!

As I sit here on a Thursday afternoon writing this post: I am working part-time as a nanny/babysitter (awaiting a full-time gig in May 2023), I am shadowing my Esthetician in hopes to one day start working part-time in her studio, and I am working remotely, part-time as the salon manager for Cocktail Hair Studio. I’m feeling like the pieces of the puzzle are slowly coming together. I appreciate you being here, reading this, and for all the support I’ve received throughout this tough season! Until next time! (hopefully soon)

xoxo Aly
