Miley Cyrus is on the rise y’all!! And so is this makeup trend that is the perfect soft and simple Memorial Day makeup.
This morning as I was sitting in my bed, scrolling through Facebook, I was suddenly inspired. I was watching a video of Miley Cyrus performing her new single ‘Malibu’ on The Voice. I’ve always been a fan of Miley’s singing voice and her new song is right up my alley.
Naturally, I have been keeping up with all of her performances of ‘Malibu’ from Wango Tango, to the Billboard Music Awards and now on The Voice. Not only has Miley completely transitioned her musical sound but her image has changed as well! She has been sporting a very natural glowy makeup look that I am just dying over. It is the perfect soft and simple makeup look for Memorial Day. Regardless of what your plans are this makeup look can transition from a beach day, to a barbecue, to a street fair.
What I love most about this new makeup trend is that it’s just the right amount of glam. No contour, no false lashes, no winged liner, and no bold lipstick. It plays off of your natural features and enhances them drawing attention to where it matters; your eyes and lips. Applying the right amount of shimmer to the right places gives off this almost wet look. Miley rocks it and it is the perfect companion to her melodic single ‘Malibu’. Granted, Miley has bright blue eyes and even though mine are brown, I couldn’t wait to try to recreate this makeup look.
Where to Begin
Beginning with primer I grabbed my Milk Makeup Blur Stick and generously rubbed this all over my face. At $36 this primer is a prized possession and I have to admit it was a ‘YouTube made me buy it’ purchase. I’m ashamed to say that I have barely used it!! Thankfully…today was the day for this primer which claims to “minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines for an invisible, smooth, matte finish.” Sounds like the perfect base for this girls problematic skin.
For this look you don’t want your foundation to be full coverage because you want your natural skin to peek through. Lately I have been loving the Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Hydrating Foundation. It gives the perfect amount of coverage while still looking like natural skin. My favorite thing about this foundation is that it covers minor blemishes and pigmentation without settling into any fine lines or pores.

In order to achieve this no makeup-makeup look it appeared she only had on bronzer, highlighter, and no blush. To give my face a similar dimension I decided to lightly apply Benefit’s Hula bronzer on the perimeters of my face. Using The Balm’s Mary-Lou Manizer I lightly dusted highlighter over the tops of my cheeks, bridge of my nose, and on my cupids bow. Applying highlighter to your face is one of the crucial steps to achieving a glowy, natural, wet looking complexion. Another must is a setting spray and lately I’ve been using Morphe’s new Prep & Set makeup setting spray.
Finding The Right Balance
One of the first makeup brands that I discovered via YouTube was ColourPop. This brand is Los Angeles born and raised and offers very affordable makeup. Since discovering this brand they have really expanded and improved their formulas. When I saw Miley’s gleaming eye lids I instantly thought of my FAVORITE super shock shadow by ColourPop in the shade Alchemy. [Sadly I just discovered this shadow has been discontinued!! wah…]
Typically I use Alchemy as an added glimmer on top of another eyeshadow shade. For this look I didn’t want there to really be any color so I grabbed a new shadow I had yet to try out. Kiko Milano Cosmetics make a water eyeshadow that is meant to be used wet or dry and I was given the shade 200 Champagne as a birthday gift. This eyeshadow has the most beautiful design which made me not want to use it because I didn’t want to disturb it. I’m glad I did for this look however because in combination with Alchemy it was the perfect sheen. I was careful not to apply to much of either shadow because I wanted a subtle shimmer rather than gleaming glitter.
Lastly I used L’oreal’s Original Voluminous Mascara and applied at least three layers. Even though this was a soft and glowy no-makeup makeup look if I didn’t add a little drama to my lashes I would have felt like I wasn’t wearing any makeup at all.
I’m not gonna lie…I was tempted to add a soft fluttery false lash to this look. Lately I’ve been feeling like if I don’t want to wear false lashes then I at least need to have a winged liner. So doing this soft and glowy makeup look was definitely pushing my boundaries. But I ended up loving it!
I felt like I was embracing my natural features and it came out very feminine and sweet.
The Final Touch
The final touch that really sealed the deal was lip gloss. ColourPop’s best product in my opinion is their lip products. One of my favorites is their Utra Glossy Lip in the shade Aquarius. After applying my gloss and stepping back…I was actually pretty pleased with how the look came out.
This is just what I needed to remind me that sometimes less is more. I get carried away when I sit at my vanity with all my products in front of me. I end up putting on way more makeup and spending way longer doing it than intended.
I’m so glad I tried this look and can definitely say it will be my summer go to.
I truly feel like this is going to be the next up and coming makeup trend for the summer.
Barely there, very minimalistic, with a wet sheen.
I know it is something that everyone can embrace and play around with whether it be a seasoned makeup vet or a brand new makeup lover. This look can be achieved with a wide variation of products and techniques. It doesn’t require too much time or technique which is why I am declaring it the official Memorial Day makeup! Lets start this summer right without hiding our natural beauty and bearing it all! Are you going to try and recreate this look?
